I’m Aaron, lawyer at East City Legal.
I was born in England and came to Canada when I was five. After being raised in Richmond Hill, I set down roots in Peterborough in 2006 and have been living here since. I am thrilled to be an associate at East City Legal, a firm who shares my personal and professional values.
I took an unconventional path to becoming a lawyer. My interest in law began in 2011 when I separated from my partner. After my separation, I was given the advice to learn as much as I could about family law. I followed the advice and was confident enough in what I had learned to self-represent at my family law trial, where I was granted equal shared parenting of my children. This triggered a passion for law and I eventually decided to switch careers from mechanical designer to lawyer. I graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School with the Litigation, Dispute Resolution and Administration of Justice designation. Through my personal experience with the family court system and my legal training, I truly appreciate the challenges separated individuals face.
Although I was not able to settle my case before going to trial, I believe that court should be a last resort to resolve family law disputes. As an advocate my primary objective is to assist clients in resolving their disputes in a timely and cost-effective manner. This means providing clients with sound legal advice and encouraging them to use alternative dispute resolution options and settle cases when it is appropriate to do so. However, I also understand that sometimes resolving matters outside of court is not always practical. In those cases, I represent clients through the court process, either as counsel of record or on a limited scope basis.
Volunteering and community involvement have always been important to me. While at Osgoode, I was a mentor for the Disability Collective and for the Mature Students Association. Prior to attending law school, I volunteered in a number of positions with my children’s School Board.
Memorable moments
After being successful at my own family court trial, I was invited to be a guest speaker at a conference for the Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators, where I spoke on the experience of being a self-represented litigant.
